It was in the 334 BCE that Alexander the Great conquered the area of Turkey and divided it into small kingdoms. However, these kingdoms did not remain Hellenistic for a long period of time. About 300 years afterward, the Romans conquered them, and from then on began a golden rule for Turkey. Byzantium was made the new capital of the Roman Empire by Constantine I, which later came to be known as Constantinople.

After a much eventful history, it was in the 15th Century AD that the Ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople and made it their own. Constantinople was renamed as Istanbul. Incidentally, this single event affected the world trade (of Europe with Asia and Africa) that was being carried on through Constantinople, forcing merchants to seek new trade routes.

Most of the modern history of Turkey is shaped by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who is also the founder and the first President of the Republic of Turkey. After the victory of the Turkish War of Independence on September 18, 1922, under his leadership, the Republic of Turkey was formed and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk became the first President. Ankara was made the capital of this new republic.

Then there are Mediterranean beach resorts on Antalya, Dalyan and Bodrum and the Cappadocia Caves in interior Turkey.
